Two units computer to be connected if both computer can exchange data / information, share resources owned, such as files, printers, storage media (hard disk, floppy disk, cd-rom, flash disks, etc.). Data in the form of text, audio, and video media moving through wires or wireless, allowing users computer in a computer network to exchange files/data, print on the same printer and using hardware or software in the network are connected together.
Each computer, printer or peripherals that are connected in a network is called a node. A computer network consists of at least two or more units of a computer, the computer can amount to tens, thousands, or even millions of nodes that are connected to each other. In the computer network system known nodes connections (computers) thats include Peer-to-Peer and Client Server.
Before the popular computer network, computer users know the distributed system. There is something quite confusing use of the term in computer networks and distributed systems. The similiar both of them are a data collection system of computers that connected to the transmission media relatively not much different, and both have to move the file. More specific differences between computer networks and distributed systems is as follows:
Different between Computer Networks and Distributing System
Computer Networks
- Computers connected is a combination consisting of multiple workstations or also combined server and client computers.
- Some computers are connected in order to share, but each job is handled separately by the computer that requested and asked for service.
- The server only serve requests according queuing system that is set up.
- The quality of data communication is affected by the transmission media used.
- The duration of a process influenced by the hardware specification of each station that requested the service.
- Users can determine the ongoing process (in computer station or on the server).
- Computers communication method with a model of Peer-to-Peer or Client Server .
Distributed Systems
- Computers connected include host (main computer) and terminals.
- Some host computers connected in order to work on a large or multiple jobs together.
- The hosts serve multiple terminals and the process based on input from the terminals.
- The quality of data communication is affected by the system.
- The length of the process depends on the operating system of a computer processor that will choose which one to use.
- Users can not know the ongoing processes in the host.
- Computer communication method is centralized (centralized on the main computer/host).
